ROLL THE DICE

Like a lot of people, I really enjoy decorating, thrifting, and the occasional DIY project. There’s something relaxing about it for me—especially in the summer months when I find myself spending a little extra time indoors, scrolling through what other budget-conscious bloggers are finding, styling, and talking about from their own thrift adventures.

Living here in the Midwest, fall tends to show up with those crisp, chilly days that make layering almost a necessity. So my wardrobe naturally shifts into boots, sweaters, jackets, and all those cozy combinations that make getting dressed feel a bit more creative. I don’t always aim for perfect matches either—I lean more toward coordinating pieces, which is why thrifting works so well for me. It gives me the freedom to mix textures, colors, and styles in a way that still feels pulled together.

I’ve read a lot of posts where people mention finding clothes sold by the pound, but I personally haven’t come across that kind of sale yet. What I did run into recently, though, was something completely unexpected—and honestly kind of fun—that I thought I’d share.

My husband and I stopped into a thrift store not too long ago, and I started browsing as I usually do, looking for pieces I could pair with items I already own—like an old Coach purse I bought years ago. I ended up finding a few “forever pieces,” the kind you don’t overthink because they just feel useful and versatile right away.

But the real surprise came at checkout.

When I went to pay, the clerk told me about a promotion they were running: roll the dice, and whatever number you get determines your additional discount. I wasn’t expecting that at all—it felt a little like a game show moment in the middle of a thrift store.

I rolled… and landed on a 4.

That meant an extra 20% off my already discounted items, which honestly felt like one of those little wins you don’t forget.

Here’s what came home with me:

  • Karen Scott blazer
  • Sonoma Life & Style poncho
  • Worthington white turtleneck
  • Haband’s Thermal King double-zip boots

Nothing overly extravagant, just really practical, wearable pieces that fit right into my everyday life.

And that’s really what I love most about thrifting—it’s not just about saving money, it’s about the surprise of it all. You never quite know what you’re going to find, or how the day will unfold.

Hopefully this gives you a little inspiration for your own closet. And if you feel like it, maybe take a wander through a thrift store or two—you never know what kind of small surprises might be waiting for you.
