ACCESSORIES: DONATE & SELL

Donating and selling accessories has become one of my favorite ways to clear out items I no longer use. It feels good to let things go, especially when you know they might get a second life with someone else who will actually enjoy them.

A few years after we moved here, I realized I really needed to start parting with some of my collection. I had intended to drop things off at a local thrift shop, but when I got there the donation area was completely full. So on a whim, I decided to try listing a few items online instead—and that ended up opening a whole new experience for me.

At that time, I had built up quite a collection of scarves and handbags. What surprised me most was how many of my vintage pieces actually had interest. Some of them found new homes much faster than I expected.

I’ll be honest, though—it wasn’t always easy to let the scarves go. They’re soft, silky, and full of personality. I used to spend time just looking at them, noticing the different patterns and textures, and wondering about the designers behind them—how they chose the colors, how they decided on the prints, what inspired each piece.

There’s something very personal about accessories like that. They’re small, but they carry a lot of character.

Over time, I also learned that if you’re planning to list items online, it really helps to have a few basics on hand. It makes the whole process smoother and a lot less stressful. Things like:

  • a lint roller
  • a fabric shaver
  • a measuring tape
  • tissue paper
  • a thank-you card
  • shipping tape
  • a box cutter
  • scissors
  • mailers or shipping boxes

Having those little tools ready makes packing feel more organized and intentional, rather than rushed.

In a way, the whole process has taught me that letting go doesn’t have to feel abrupt—it can be thoughtful. And sometimes, it even becomes a way of appreciating what you once owned in a new and different way.
