POKAGON STATE PARK AND POWAWATOMI INN

Pokagon State Park was originally called Lake James State Park. The name was changed to Pokagon State Park to acknowledge the Native American heritage. Leopold and Simon Pokagon were father and son and notable leaders of the Potawatomi.

The park’s Potawatomi Inn ( shown above) takes its name from these Native Americans, who made their home in the area.

The park is open all year and features hiking trails, a toboggan, and two beaches. Camping sites are also available. The park is framed by Lake James and Snow Lake.

November is a busy month for us however we make time to visit this park, While our friends visit more exotic and warmer destinations, we enjoy the view from the lodge. We frequently spend time watching waterfowl on Lake James.

In the past, we've brought along our dogs ( photo taken a few years back).

This November 2021, we came without the dogs and spent time at the Interpretive Center. We had lunch, walked the brick path, trails, and relaxed lakeside.

There are many ways to entertain oneself at Pokagon. While I prefer to sit and read near the water and hike the trails, many visitors enjoy a guided horseback ride on a 2-mile bridle trail.

Pokagon State Park also has a refrigerated Toboggan Run which has a 30-foot tower and provides an adventure to around 90,000 riders a season.

There are many opportunities at Pokagon to explore and indulge and relax.
